Eakins Oval is one of Philadelphia’s most iconic civic spaces, anchoring the northwest terminus of the Benjamin Franklin Parkway and embodying the legacy of the City Beautiful Movement. Conceived as a monumental urban gesture, the Oval has historically prioritized visual grandeur and vehicular movement, leaving its pedestrian experience fragmented and underutilized. This project reimagines Eakins Oval as a contemporary public realm—one that honors its historic role while transforming it into an accessible, immersive, and people-centered landscape.
Three core objectives lead the design of the Eakins Oval: elevating the pedestrian experience, exaggerating existing topography to enhance significant views, and diversifying landscape types to support a wide range of activities.Together, these strategies reshape Eakins Oval from a city backboard into a city destination that offers the opportunity for all visitors to linger, explore, and gather.
Pedestrian circulation is restructured through a layered network of paths. A clear, direct spine allows efficient movement across the site, while secondary meandering routes peel off into quieter pockets, encouraging slower exploration. New entry points strengthen connections to the Philadelphia Museum of Art and adjacent neighborhoods, opening the site to surrounding communities and inviting multiple modes of engagement.
Topography becomes a primary design tool. By amplifying existing elevation changes—making high points higher and low points lower—the design frames and intensifies key sightlines toward City Hall, the Washington Monument, and the Parkway. Elevated terraces serve as viewing platforms, while a sunken central plaza forms a flexible gathering space capable of hosting large civic events. Subtle landform shifts create spatial buffers that distinguish tourist-oriented areas from spaces intended for everyday neighborhood use.
A diverse palette of landscape zones supports both passive and active programs. Secluded gardens, conversation pits, and hillside seating coexist with a playground, performance stage, amphitheater, and concession pavilion. Materiality reinforces this spatial hierarchy, with varied concrete finishes and planted areas articulating circulation, program zones, and gathering spaces.
Through its integration of circulation, landform, and program, the project transforms Eakins Oval into a dynamic civic landscape—one that celebrates Philadelphia’s historic vistas while offering a contemporary, inclusive, and engaging public experience for all.
