This project is situated in Lanzhou’s Yantan district, a key part of the city’s development plan along the south bank of the Yellow River. It integrates contemporary living, natural appeal, and a forward-looking vision for ecology and culture. The design draws inspiration from a classical verse that evokes both geographical remoteness and emotional longing: “Why should the Qiang flute mourn the willows? The spring breeze never reaches the Jade Gate Pass.” Moving beyond this theme of distance, this project instead reimagines connection through the symbolic meaning of crabapple blossoms—a bridge between the resilient character of China's northwest and the gentle beauty of its southern regions.
Guided by the concept of “Spring Arrives in Lanzhou, Carried by the Crabapple,” the visitor journey unfolds gradually. The sequence begins at the grand entrance, marked by a sculptural crabapple installation, then continues along corridors finished with refined stone and pavilions featuring delicate cascading water curtains that visually connect different levels. The sunken garden offers an immersive space of understated elegance. Meanwhile, the children’s play area takes inspiration from the vibrant hues of the Danxia landforms, creating a narrative-rich, IP-oriented zone for exploration and learning. Throughout these spaces, poetic charm is woven into a contemporary setting. Thoughtful use of elevation changes, multi-functional areas, and detailed craftsmanship further enrich the experience, creating a layered and engaging visit within a compact urban site.
What began as limitations—tight space and competing functional requirements—have been transformed into opportunities through considered design. The layout encourages a slower pace and fosters meaningful connection; sculptural walls and water features create a sense of expansiveness in confined entry zones; and fire access lanes are integrated into active communal areas. The material strategy is equally deliberate: luxury stone is used where touch is emphasized, while realistic alternatives are applied where visual effect dominates, striking an ideal balance between aesthetic refinement, sensory quality, and cost efficiency.
