Waving & Density is an adaptive reuse project that reimagines bamboo as both an ecological remedy and a social infrastructure, transforming underutilized spaces in Red Hook, Brooklyn.
The project begins with bamboo used as a phytoremediation agent to cleanse a lead-contaminated recreational park. Once harvested, the same bamboo is processed locally and reused to construct a new community center atop existing concrete structures, minimizing demolition, cost, and embodied carbon. This closed-loop system turns environmental repair into architectural production.
Situated between Red Hook’s public housing and its thriving art district, the community center functions as an urban bridge. Existing factories and vacant storefronts are repurposed into bamboo processing facilities, workshops, artist studios, communal kitchens, and exhibition spaces—supporting local employment, food access, and cultural exchange. The integration of urban agriculture and farm-to-table dining strengthens community resilience while addressing food insecurity.
The architecture is seasonally adaptive. In summer, operable bamboo panels open the building into a porous, semi-public hub for festivals, markets, and community gatherings. In winter, enclosed spaces and layered insulation ensure comfort and energy efficiency. Across all phases, bamboo structures range from dense clusters to fine woven skins, demonstrating the material’s structural, spatial, and expressive versatility.
By combining adaptive reuse, phytoremediation, and community-driven production, Waving & Density proposes a replicable model for sustainable urban transformation. The project positions bamboo not only as a building material, but as a catalyst for environmental healing, social connection, and long-term resilience.
