Canyon of Light

Canyon of Light is a site-specific public art installation that transforms deconstructed shipping container skins into a canyon-like spatial passage at Kaohsiung’s waterfront. The project invites visitors to walk through a gradual transition from shadow to light, experiencing an immersive environment shaped by mist, filtered daylight, and shifting shadows.
Two folded steel panels rise upward to form a sculptural corridor, creating a spatial narrative of passage and discovery. Recycled PET translucent panels soften sunlight, casting dynamic patterns across the ground, while concealed linear lighting and mist devices visualize light as a floating atmospheric field. Visitors perceive subtle changes in illumination, airflow, humidity, and sound, turning the act of walking into a sensory journey.
The form echoes a metallic wave shaped by coastal winds, symbolizing Kaohsiung’s transformation from an industrial port city to a culture- and ecology-oriented urban landscape. By reusing container materials, the installation reframes industrial remnants as cultural artifacts, connecting the city’s maritime heritage with contemporary public life.
As a public artwork, Canyon of Light functions as a civic landmark and an experiential urban landscape. It encourages citizens and visitors to slow down, pause, and reflect on the relationship between industry, nature, and collective memory. Through light, mist, and movement, the installation creates a poetic moment of transition—where architecture becomes atmosphere and space becomes an emotional landscape.
