Inspired by Chinese shadow puppetry, a nationally recognized intangible cultural heritage, this project translates the narrative of light and shadow into a contemporary context. Drawing from the archetype of the traditional Chinese New Year lantern, the design applies modern aesthetics and structural logic to systematically reimagine and deepen the flower barrel form. Through a refined orchestration of proportion, layering, and illumination, it reconstructs the cultural essence of shadow puppetry—shaping through light, storytelling through shadow. While preserving collective festive memory, the project establishes a new cultural medium that balances ritual presence, visual appeal, and communicative power, offering a contemporary interpretation of traditional festive artifacts rooted in intangible heritage.
The cylinder features a multi-layered wall system that creates a rich spatial depth of light and shadow. The inner layer integrates a concealed lighting unit, serving as the luminous foundation. The middle layer incorporates cultural symbols of Henan—solemn sculptures, Zen-inspired architecture, modern landmarks, and dynamic urban forms—while the outer layer embraces iconic Chinese New Year motifs. Even when unlit, the object remains refined, festive, and sculptural.
Once illuminated, light penetrates the patterned layers, unfolding a luminous panorama of regional culture. Echoing the visual language of shadow puppetry, the design transforms from an object into a scene—revealing heritage through movement, and allowing tradition to emerge seamlessly within contemporary spaces.
With its interchangeable inner layers, the design invites users to personalize messages and blessings. This participatory approach transforms the object into an emotional medium—one that evolves over time and strengthens the connection between people, tradition, and celebration.
Crowning the design is a sculpted Tang Dynasty horse, galloping atop auspicious clouds. When illuminated, its physical form resonates with the projected silhouette within, creating a layered dialogue between reality and shadow. Symbolizing the Year of the Horse, it embodies vitality, momentum, and the enduring spirit of cultural confidence.
