Holiday cups have become a seasonal tradition for McDonald’s guests. Every year, people look forward to seeing what arrives on their morning coffee, and the designs have become a small but meaningful part of the holiday experience. At the same time, the category has grown increasingly crowded. With so many brands now releasing holiday cups, the landscape can often feel predictable, with familiar patterns, snowflakes, and classic red and green palettes appearing everywhere.
For 2025, we saw an opportunity to create something that felt truly different. The Grinch offered the perfect spark of inspiration. In partnership with Dr. Seuss Enterprises, we tapped into a character with unmistakable personality and a playful spirit that aligned beautifully with the McCafé brand. The goal was to create a cup that felt bold, expressive, and instantly recognizable while still honoring the clean, simple look that defines McCafé.
The final design embraced the Grinch’s fuzzy, mischievous charm in a warm and inviting way. Soft, hand drawn textures inspired by his iconic fur, expressive eyes and smirks that brought immediate attitude, and bright Grinch forward colors created a look that was festive without feeling expected. The simplicity of the layout kept the McCafé logo clear and confident, resulting in a cup that stood out from the seasonal crowd while still feeling modern and refined.
What happened next felt organic and authentic. The cups were not advertised in restaurants, on the app, or across social channels. Guests discovered them on their own, and excitement spread naturally. People shared them, talked about them, and celebrated the unexpected twist on a holiday classic. The Grinch cups quickly became a moment that felt special, charming, and unmistakably McDonald’s.
In a holiday season filled with familiar graphics and safe seasonal designs, McCafé delivered something bold, character driven, and joyfully mischievous. The Grinch hot cups proved that packaging can still surprise people, spark conversation, and create a moment guests want to be part of.
