can function not only as a venue for large events, but also as an open civic space that remains active and connected to the city.
The design takes inspiration from traditional pavilion structures, where a large roof creates a sheltered gathering space beneath it. In this project, a radial timber framework extends outward from the center of the arena, forming a clear structural system that supports a lightweight membrane canopy. The roof structure spans the stadium while allowing natural light to filter through, creating a bright and open interior environment.
The canopy becomes the defining architectural element of the project. Its layered structure and radial form create a strong visual identity while providing shelter for large crowds. At night, the roof can glow softly, transforming the stadium into a recognizable landmark within the city.
Rather than enclosing the arena with solid walls, the building maintains open and transparent edges. This approach allows views into the stadium and strengthens the connection between the building and the surrounding urban environment. Circulation paths and terraces wrap around the arena, offering spaces where visitors can walk, gather, and experience the building even when events are not taking place.
Flexibility is an important part of the design. The central arena can accommodate different configurations for sports competitions, concerts, cultural events, and public performances. Surrounding public areas support markets, festivals, and everyday social activities.
By combining a clear structural concept with an open civic approach, The Urban Canopy reimagines the stadium as a shared urban platform. The project demonstrates how large public venues can support not only major events but also daily public life, bringing people together through architecture.
