Maxland Historical Theme Plaza

Located in Bao’an District, Shenzhen, the project is a commercial street that integrates catering, entertainment and shopping. It draws on classic Chinese architectural elements, well blending modern catering and commercial activities into the classic ancient commercial street. Consumers walk along the street as if they are experiencing a lively ancient bazaar that features numerous lanterns at night.

Inspired by Qingming Shanghe Tu, the famous Chinese painting by Song Dynasty painter Zhang Zeduan, the design uses the montage technique to reconstruct scenes and cultural atmosphere involved in the classic painting. The first image leading to the main space is the bridge. The reconstruction considers the fusion of culture and modern life and the echoing of people and space. Since it’s a commercial space, the designers combine commercial services with movie scenes. That is, all service staff, including patrolmen and merchants, dress in ancient costume and greet in an ancient way. It’s a different and playful world in such a futuristic era.

The designers create impressive nodes to divide areas with specific functions and atmosphere. Images, like bridge, pavilion, tower, wishing tree, square, stage, etc., together with scenes, offer varying experiences to people in different ages. There are two bridges set to connect spaces, and the fusion of old and new materials forms unique color and charm to this world. Display areas of intangible cultural heritages and crafts are scattered in shop district. Based on a unique sense of ritual derived from the original architectural structure, playful spaces are formed via the combination of lighting, electricity and sound, so as to express a deep love for Chinese classic culture.
