HANGZHOU SHIMAO FESTIVAL CITY

According to the long term urban planning strategies, with the ongoing arrangement of ecological parks and green fascia network, the site of this project is sitting in the middle of an uprising hotspot of the northeast Hangzhou. With a high standard environmental condition in possession, the location doesn’t lose its history and memories when Jianqiao Old street and Ex-central aviation academy remain active and influential in this neighborhood, like what we imagine about Hangzhou all the time, a city floating in paintings, poets and nature.



Avoiding being a playground of rational geometrical composition without references or an assamblage of rigid imitation from traditional architectural elements, what we would like to demonstrate is an sensational, purified but readable design language by waving the exterior surface both in horizontal and vertical directions. As a result, The flowing painting scrolls emerged as a fundamental image of the key concept that the morphology of the mass remains nonabstract and easy to recognize but the flesh for the scrolls remains free to be what it supposed to, practical elements, sequential spaces or node spaces etc.



Several key spots are linked together and construct a spatial route system with fascinatingly distinguished place experiences, from outside to inside, from underground to roof top.

Jianqiao Metro station with Metro line 4 and another metro line in planning are connected to the sunken plaza that leading the passengers directly to the underground market. Meanwhile, you also have an alternative route from the Metro exit level continuously passing through the grand escalator to City Terrace at 3rd floor where the iconic book store is located at the starting point of the inner high street. After walking through the high street at 3rd level, the double story high City Core appears at the North west corner of the building, providing an interactive panoramic urban landscape. Walking up from the sculpture-like spiral stair, arriving to the roof top where Live stage and roof farmland are placed to create an atmosphere of slow and eco-friendly lifestyle for the neighborhood nearby.
