A house, is not just a building, but a carrier of culture and spirit. This project is a residence designed for the elderly in Xiluo, Yunlin. The small town is the origin of Tai Chi, a martial art that embodies the balance of Ying and Yan, therefore, the designer takes inspiration from it and infuses the harmonious spirit into the design, creating a place for its residents to savor the stillness of the space, the passing of time, and the spiritual changes among it.

The building almost looks like a man practicing Tai Chi from above, which is an interesting way to interpret the martial art. The sleek and simple exterior and the grey from the faired-face concrete establish an elegant, silent atmosphere; The curves and angles on the side liven the space up. To build a comfortable living environment, a French window is set in the living room on every floor, allowing the sunlight to enter the space. Extra windows are also set to ensure the ventilation and keep the bath rooms from piling up humidity. What’s more, there are various of recreation areas in the building, including Mahjogh, which is a tradition gambling game enjoyed by the elderly, and foot bathing area. With these facilities, the designer hopes the residents can have a comfortable, sociable, and interesting life here.

The structure is made of reinforced concrete which is good for fire resistance and sound insulation and also recyclable, is the most common and well-performed technique in Taiwan. The staircase as the wind tunnel in the structure, alongside the waterscape on first floor, create natural flowing air breezing through the building. The fluid ventilation reduces the use of air conditioner, furthermore, decreases the carbon emission.

In hopes of building a wonderful living space for the elderly, or even for extended families, the designer works very hard. The design and attention to details encourages the residents to dream big while fulfilling all the needs of everyday life.
