Serratus Pepper Mill

The Serratus pepper mill is a playful reimagination of the familiar household classic. The intention was to evoke curiosity and surprise the user; the design, at first glance, seems to be a single continuous piece of wood, almost impossibly delicate, with the function of the object not immediately evident. In truth, this device is quite straightforward: simply twist the top to produce fresh pepper.

Although the mill was designed to appear fragile, it is actually incredibly strong; a solid stainless steel shaft hides behind wood less than a millimetre thick at the isthmus. A stainless steel funnel built into the base provides a convenient way to refill the pepper and also allowed us to fine-tune the weight characteristics of the product. The mill features a Danish ceramic grinding mechanism durable enough to be used with any spices or rock salt without compromising longevity.

The base and the top knob, which begin production as a single solid block of wood, are crafted separately and meticulously re-assembled to form the curvaceous grain-matched body of the mill. Extremely tight manufacturing tolerances are critical; we needed to develop many unique tools and techniques to achieve the results we were seeking.
