Kindergarten of Chiao-Jen Elementary School, Taiwan

Located in an existing elementary school campus of Nantou County, a hilly county of Taiwan Formosa. This project is under the government goal of “Campus Communization Plan” where schools provide affordable learning resources for the community kids. The government expanded the availability of affordable public education for age 3 to 6 allocating properties from existing schools and public facilities.

Our project is a kindergarten within a small corner site of Chiao-Jen Elementary School. The kindergarten has 2 classes with a total of 60 students. The new building sets back from the existing school entrance courtyard which builds up a safer control of children coming to school. The main concept of the architecture is to interpret fairytale elements by composing 3 colorized pitched roofs with a red chimney-shaped elevator.

Our goal is to create an inviting atmosphere encouraging kids to join the campus, the kids’ very first school. With limited budgets, we achieved the design by using children acquainted colors and shapes. From the exterior, it is like entering a playing block castle, and from the interior, it feels like home.
