Interview
1 Please give us a brief bio of yourself and your design background.
My name is Te-Sian Shih who is a graphic, package, branding, UIUX, logo, and web designer in New York City. I have won many international awards such as A Design Awards, IDA International Design Awards, Muse Design Awards, GD USA Pakcage Design, GD USA Inhouse Design Awards, Graphis Poster Annual Design Awards, Graphis New Talented Annual, and DNA Paris Awards. Besides, I participated in Florence Biennale 2019, Genova Biennale 2021, art exhibitions at the Oculus World Trade Center in 2020, art exhibitions at New York City in 2020, and "Taiwan: A World of Orchid" art exhibition which supported by Taiwan's Ministry of Culture in 2021. Furthermore, I have helped many high-end clients to build up their branding designs and explore their markets.
2 What made you become/why did you choose to become a designer/artist?
My undergraduate master's was in Marketing and Logistics management. I joined a competition to promote a city in Taiwan supported by Taiwan External Trade Development Council when I attended my bachelor's school. At that time, we cooperated with the digital design department. As a result, I found out all the marketing strategies needed to become valid by visual design such as brochures, posters, web...etc. Therefore, I decided to learn graphic design and changed my major after I graduated from my undergraduate.
3 Tell us more about your business/company, job profile, and what you do.
I have worked for different clients in New York City, such as fashion clothes and bags companies, bedding companies, beverage companies, packaging companies, festivals, and lecture activities. I helped companies expand their branding, optimize their web, advertising, visual design, package design, and social media design. Some design works that I made for my companies have won winners from Muse Design Awards, A Design Awards, DNA Paris Design Awards, and Graphis Posters Annual Design Awards. In addition, I have helped companies to promote their reputations.
4 What does “design” mean to you?
Design is not just art. The most important thing for "design" is solving the problems and promoting the clients' branding. A good designer should have various knowledge from different areas, know what clients want, and communicate the missions of the clients and companies through design.
5 What’s your favorite kind of design and why?
I have no preferred design style, but I love the design can convey the businesses or any special meaning of the design. A spirit of the design is essential, and all the design projects that can communicate the subject's hearts are my favorite design.
6 To you, what makes a “good” design?
A good design should convey the subject's spirit very clear. A good design doesn't need to have high technology to make, but it should express the subject of the project or missions of clients.
7 Describe your design style and its main characteristics.
My design style combines eastern style and western thinking. I came from Taiwan and went to Pratt Institute in New York City to learn visual design, so I know the difference between eastern and western. I have learned how to do mindmap and deep thinking for innovation in New York City and keep the eastern's culture in my mind. However, I don't want to abandon my original culture, so I want to combine both eastern and western cultures into my design.
8 Tell us about your design process.
When I got a new project, I would check the size, content, style, subject to make sure those elements are clients or companies need, and then I would do some research for my moldboard and define the branding style.
9 Do you think your country and its cultural heritage has an impact on your design process?
Yes, for sure. Taiwan has its unique design style and spirit. I have used Taiwan's design style in my projects many times.
10 Congratulations! As the winner of the 2021 MUSE Design Awards, what does it mean to you and your company and team to receive this award distinction?
It's my second time to receive the winner of the MUSE Design Awards, and it has a special meaning to me. It means my design has become mature and not just win the award for one time and then no any surprising design projects in my career again. To win the 2021 MUSE Design Awards again means I am a sound designer and need to learn new design skills.
11 Can you explain a bit about the winning work you entered into the 2021 MUSE Design Awards, and why you chose to enter this project?
I drew all the elements for this winning project and communicated the mission and spirit of the company. It's for Musica Festival in SanFrancisco, and the result was successful! I am very proud of myself and this winning project!
12 What was the biggest challenge with this project?
My client asked me to draw a subject from the beginning of this year, so it's very challenging. I didn't have any source that could be used, but it's also fun to make a new shape of the subject.
13 How has winning an Award developed your practice/career?
It's good for me to convince my clients to listen to my advice and know why I design in this way. If I don't win an Award, some clients won't like to take my suggestions.
14 What are your top three (3) favorite things about our industry?
Creativity Discussion with different people Build up the branding
15 What makes your country specifically, unique in the design industry?
Taiwan has a unique eastern design style, and the United States has various thoughts and techniques of design. Both can make me have profound ideas for my design.
16 Where do you see the evolution of design industry going over the next 5-10 years?
Poster, web, and different 2D design projects will be turned into 3D or virtual industry. VR will be the new trend in the future, so the design industry must be changed to fit the new environment.
17 If you were a student entering this industry or an aspiring MUSE Design Awards submitter, what advice would you give them?
Never stop learning. Keep doing what you can do.
18 What resources would you recommend to someone who wants to improve their skills in the design industry?
Design Workshop and courses.
19 Tell us something you have never told anyone else.
I am the designer who combines eastern style and western style into my project and won the MUSE Design Awards twice.
20 Who has inspired you in your life and why?
My design professors. They really love their projects and are always enthusiastic and kind. I really appreciate them.
21 What is your key to success? Any parting words of wisdom?
Keep learning. Never stop.
22 Do you have anything else you would like to add to the interview?
I will keep attending international biennales or exhibitions globally and try to win more Design Awards and build up my career. A good designer should never stop challenging myself.
