Chun-Yi Lu ,BaHaus Design Studio

1 Please give us a brief bio of yourself and your design background.

Hello World! I'm Chun-Yi Lu, a 29-year-old Graphic Designer from Taiwan, you can call me briefly: "Eight". Born in Taoyuan, Taiwan, graduated from a private university of science and technology in Taiwan, and has graduated with a bachelor's degree in visual communication design from the "Night Department". Currently a graphic designer at BaHaus Design Studio, I'm Asperger's, I see my beloved work from the perspective of Asperger's and create limitless conceptual blueprints for my hometown: Taoyuan, Taiwan.

2 What made you become/why did you choose to become a designer/artist?

In fact, I spent a total of eight years in college, and the first four years were unable to adapt to the original industrial management course, which made me wonder how I could stand on my own, but I was drawing and doodling almost every day, and at that time, I skipped school every day because I didn't understand the industrial management course. However, one wonderful night, I heard a voice clearly in my ears: "Oh! Don't you like to draw? What are you going to do after studying this? "Strange to say, because of that voice, I changed my mind and actively changed schools, starting in the Department of Visual Communication Design, working hard to realize my dream of becoming a designer step by step.

3 Tell us more about your business/company, job profile, and what you do.

BaHaus Design Studio mainly creates special conceptual design works for its hometown: Taoyuan, Taiwan, and turns ideals and dreams into practice and results. At present, BaHaus Design Studio design scope includes: brand identity system design, graphic design, advertising design, packaging design...

4 What does “design” mean to you?

I think design is a synthesis of three processes: Feeling, Touching, and Moving. All three processes are indispensable.

5 What’s your favorite kind of design and why?

I love brand identity system design because it represents all the great stories, all the good feelings, all the ideas that touch people's hearts and all the results of being moved by a brand.

6 To you, what makes a “good” design?

The feeling of a work is good, the feeling touches people's hearts, and finally people's hearts are moved by this, and that last moving is good design.

7 Describe your design style and its main characteristics.

I like to use traditional Chinese colors to plan my designs, and integrate the beauty of Chinese culture into the design, whether it is visual feelings, concept feelings or finished works.

8 Tell us about your design process.

I am accustomed to actually investigating, personally feeling the object to be designed, recording my feelings, touching, moving , and finally using creative ideas to complete the ideal perfect works.

9 Do you think your country and its cultural heritage has an impact on your design process?

Yes, as I just said, as a Chinese, I have been immersed in Chinese culture since I was a child, so I use traditional Chinese colors as the basis to understand and feel the whole design process.

10 Congratulations! As the winner of the 2023 MUSE Design Awards, what does it mean to you and your company and team to receive this award distinction?

I think it makes it even more important for me to actively and continuously create designs that move people's hearts.

11 Can you explain a bit about the winning work you entered into the 2023 MUSE Design Awards, and why you chose to enter this project?

This is my first MUSE Design Awards and I have only registered two concept works: 1. Reconstruction of Taoyuan City Emblem Identity 2. Shimen Dam Brand Concept Identity Plan, both concept works won silver awards in the conceptual category. The first is the Reconstruction of Taoyuan City Emblem Identity, which is a unique concept emblem designed for my hometown with my identity as a Taoyuan person, which represents the era of Taoyuan people's humble attitude, ethnic equality and harmony; Shimen Dam Brand Concept Identity Plan This is the Shimen Dam Scenic Area in Taoyuan, Taiwan, which was once the largest reservoir in the Far East, as the design object, and touched by the problems encountered so far, as well as the feelings and touchings of Taoyuan people. In terms of vision, color, and concept, it expresses the shocking emotion when standing on the Shimen Dam and looking at the Taoyuan area, and the good mood of leisurely relaxation when playing in the scenic area, so the conceptual brand identity plan is completed. I would like to launch these two concept works, both related to Taoyuan, Taiwan, and introduce my hometown: Taoyuan to the world.

12 What was the biggest challenge with this project?

The biggest challenge of the two concept works is how to move people's hearts with a single moment?

13 How has winning an Award developed your practice/career?

It motivates me more firmly to become a dream builder in my hometown with an attitude of humility, and to practice step by step as a graphic designer!

14 What are your top three (3) favorite things about our industry?

1. I can see many dreamers who have dreams and are waiting to build dreams. 2. The joy of dreaming and designing for dreamers. 3. See dreamers smile brightly and hopefully because of the works I designed for them.

15 What makes your country specifically, unique in the design industry?

I think this is the effort of the school teachers and other designers who are better than me for the design industry. It is everyone's efforts and the results obtained.

16 Where do you see the evolution of design industry going over the next 5-10 years?

I think design tools are a lot better now than they were a few years ago. In the next 5-10 years, some of the work may be replaced by generative AI, but in the end, it is up to people to feel, touch, and move, so I think it is unlikely that all of them will be replaced.

17 If you were a student entering this industry or an aspiring MUSE Design Awards submitter, what advice would you give them?

Maintain a heart that loves your work very much, and a passion for the design industry. Use your own feelings, touching, and moving as nutrients for your works, so as to complete works that touch people's hearts.

18 What resources would you recommend to someone who wants to improve their skills in the design industry?

I think the most important thing is not what design tools are used? Or what design skills were used? Rather, whether the works presented using these design tools and skills can touch people's hearts. Therefore, I think what is most needed is: feeling, touching, and moving, three processes that can only be experienced by humans. These are the real "design tools and skills."

19 Tell us something you have never told anyone else.

I would like to talk to all the students studying in the Department of Visual Communication Design in the "Night Department": "The mind is everything, What you think you become."

20 Who has inspired you in your life and why?

I think it was the evening department during my college days. To all the teachers who taught me, I would like to thank them for their selfless guidance and advice on the problems I encountered in my studies. I also want to thank them for their strong guidance on what I can do better when designing special topics in college. Better instructors, and all the judges who have scolded me harshly, thank you for pushing me hard, and thank you for those who deny, disdain and make things difficult for me, because your denial, disdain and making things difficult have become my abilities. The nourishment of growth pushed me onto the stage of design. And the most special thank you is the voice in my ear, thank you for keeping me from falling. Along the way, the only people I saw and heard were teachers and friends. Thank you.

21 Do you have anything else you would like to add to the interview?

Thank you to all the judges for the MUSE Design Awards, thank you.
