Digital Symphony is an immersive stage performance that integrates dance, new media art, and music. Using the dancer's body as a medium, the piece employs semi-improvisation to explore the emotions and perceptions of modern individuals navigating the digital world. Light, particles, and soundscapes intertwine and flow across the stage, creating a hybrid digital space where the virtual and the real merge. The audience is invited into a space woven by both human and digital life, to experience the unique aesthetic born from the convergence of technology and art.
Visually, the production employs techniques such as AI-generated video, procedural particle systems, and 3D modeling and rendering. These elements are then composited in post-production using new media tools like TouchDesigner. All visuals are designed to revolve around the dancer’s movements, forging an intimate dialogue between dance and imagery and revealing a symbiotic relationship between the physical body and the digital world.
The team's initial vision was to create real-time generative visuals. The goal was to use motion capture technology to enable the visuals to respond instantly to the dancer's movements, achieving a truly "body-driven" experience. However, due to on-site constraints that prevented the deployment of the necessary capture equipment and computing systems, the final performance adopted an alternative approach: the dancer's movements were pre-recorded and then used as data to generate the visuals with AI and procedural algorithms. The flowing white particles seen in the performance are, in fact, a digital avatar generated from this motion data.
In this framework, there are effectively two dancers on stage: the physical performer and a digital twin "imagined" by AI. Their duet symbolizes a dialogue between humanity and artificial intelligence, while also reflecting the artists' contemplation on "the body in the digital age." As AI learns to simulate human rhythm and emotion, are the very boundaries and definitions of the body being reshaped? By merging dance with digital technology, Digital Symphony crafts an artistic vision of human-machine symbiosis, allowing the audience to experience a new paradigm of performance art amidst a spectacle of light, shadow, and rhythm.
