Nestled against Mount Lu on the south bank of Balihu Lake, this cultural complex in the historic city of Jiujiang translates a 2,000-year legacy as the cradle of Chinese landscape painting and pastoral poetry into a contemporary architectural form. The design embodies the idyllic sentiment of “picking chrysanthemums by the eastern fence, leisurely gazing at the southern mountains,” aiming for a profound unity of form, nature, and spirit.
The program unifies three distinct pavilions—Art, Intangible Cultural Heritage, and Science Museums—under one visionary concept. Inspired by the local masterpiece Three Laughs at Tiger Creek, which depicts the harmony of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism, the architecture features three intertwined volumes enclosing a triangular roof garden. Their central-facing end facades, each unique yet harmonious, directly echo the painting's integrative philosophy. Beneath this, the elevated ground floor is split by a riverlike shallow reflecting pool that visually links the eastern and western ponds, creating a continuous water gesture and deepening the dialogue between interior and landscape. The roofs' soaring, wing-like forms engage the waterside site, directly reflecting the flight of white cranes intrinsic to Hewen Lake's lore.
The façade subtly integrates a key element of local identity: ceramic culture. Drawing from Jiujiang's profound heritage as a core carrier of Jingdezhen's porcelain tradition, the building is clad in custom glazed terracotta panels, connecting it to the regional lineage of “Jiujiang Porcelain.”
The panel design abstracts local motifs. The long, wave-shaped strips with gently curved surfaces and tilted edges evoke the imagery of bird wings and water ripples. Their staggered installation creates a refined, textured weave. The glaze employs a sophisticated gradient, transitioning from the ethereal “Sky Azure” at the edges—a color revered in Song Dynasty Ru ware—to the serene “Jade White” of the main facade. This allows the façade to merge with the landscape's light and color, subtly echoing bird feather gradations while embodying the purity of cranes and mountains, continuing the region's poetic tradition.
This project is more than a museum; it is a modern artifact where cultural heritage, natural metaphor, and contemporary function coalesce, offering citizens a serene yet powerful “poetic dwelling.”
