This project transformed a long-abandoned hotel within a 5A-level scenic area into a media center, completed under a tight budget. Inspired by Harbin city flower, the lilac, the design embodies the concept of "media flowers blooming within a palace," integrating local culture with eco-technologies to reflect the vision of China Media Group in building a world-class, green media hub that merges technology and art.
Adopting an integrated indoor-outdoor renewal strategy, the project created two core shared spaces based on the existing structure to meet the demand for open, iconic media areas: the elegant and artistic Lilac Hall, and the memory-rich Regeneration Hall. The Lilac Hall, shaped like a blooming lilac flower, serves as a visual focal point. It introduces natural light into the basement and incorporates a water feature to improve indoor humidity. Decorated with recycled construction waste, the Regeneration Hall creates textures of light and shadow, preserving historical memory. The dual atrium design fosters a warm, bright, and comfortable interior environment, responding to the local desire for ample sunlight.
In terms of function, the Lilac Hall is open to the public. The surrounding spaces are vertically zoned according to their degree of openness, including reception areas, cultural exhibition zones, studios, newsrooms, dining areas, cafes, reading spaces, and multi-function halls, which serve media exchanges and public events. The Regeneration Hall caters to internal leisure and discussion, surrounded by offices, meeting rooms, and rest areas for daily collaboration. The entire media hub is fully accessible to the public, with 92% of functional areas filled with natural light throughout the year. A special insulation system maintains an indoor temperature of 20–24℃ even when outdoor temperatures drop to -30℃. Modular spaces can be flexibly reconfigured using movable partitions. Human-machine collaborative assisted optimization design, utilizing digital simulation and intelligent regulation, ensures indoor comfort and health while significantly enhancing energy efficiency, creating a healthy, comfortable, and energy-saving indoor micro-environment.
