Pingshan Village was founded in 1490, over time, the village’s buildings and lanes fell into disrepair, giving rise to multiple hazards including structural risks, fire safety issues and poor public hygiene. Coupled with inadequate infrastructure, unsatisfactory environmental order, widespread unauthorised constructions and other prominent problems, community governance became increasingly challenging.
This community centre project is based on an existing 750-square-metre residential building. Through structural strengthening, spatial reconfiguration and upgrading of mechanical and electrical systems, it has systematically eliminated safety hazards relating to structural integrity, fire protection, electricity supply and traffic circulation. Meanwhile, by optimising the surrounding traffic layout, clearing and improving lane networks, creating roof gardens and reshaping key public spaces, the project has effectively revitalised public vitality in the area. It has created a safe, convenient, comfortable and high-quality community centre that is suitable for living, working and tourism, providing a shared living room for communication and activities for residents of all ages across the village.
Today, Pingshan Village is not only an ancient Guangfu settlement with more than 530 years of history that fully preserves traditional folk culture, but also a modern community serving university staff, students and innovation and technology professionals. It achieves an organic integration of historical and cultural inheritance and urban innovative development.
