Drawing from the natural and cultural essence of Quanzhou’s Twelve Scenes, this project reinterprets their spirit through a modern design language, crafting twelve poetic landscapes within a contemporary courtyard residence. The presentation area features five selected scenes, inspired by their spatial soul, to form a “Five-Courtyard Journey” where living and wandering blend with nature.
(1) Gateway Ceremony | Cloud Bridge Over Stream: Inspired by the solemn ritual of crossing a cloud-like bridge to the temple from the saying “The Glow of Confucian Temple,” this space establishes a tone of order and grace.
(2) Hall Front | Inkstone Pond and Shadows: Evolved from the waterside pavilions and leisure of “Anping Flying Rainbow,” it draws from Tang poet Du Xunhe’s imagery. Latticed windows and screens cast delicate shadows, while a tranquil pool mirrors an inkstone pond, creating an elegant waterside experience—thus named “Inkstone Pond and Shadows.”
(3) Open Pavilion | Orchid Pavilion Gathering: Rooted in the sheltered rest under eaves in “Ancient House Grand View,” it revives Quanzhou’s traditional leisure. Centered on the poetic motifs of “ascending the terrace, facing the stream, and gathering wood” from Orchid Pavilion Poems, it shapes a refined meeting space surrounded by trees and water known as the “Orchid Pavilion Gathering.”
(4) Water Returns to Hall | Tower in Flowing Clouds: Adopting the open lakeshore and winding bridges of “East Lake in Lotus Scent,” it echoes Li Shen’s verse. Bridges, water, rocks, and towers compose a dynamic landscape in a sunken courtyard, unfolding like a living scroll—named “Tower in Flowing Clouds.”
(5) Waterside Dwelling | Starry Shore by the Tide: Extracted from the endless tides and shore views of “Luoyang Tides,” it brings forests and lakes indoors. Inspired by Tang Wengru’s imagery of water and starry skies, it forms a pure, reflective space where the moon meets the stars on water, i.e., the “Starry Shore by the Tide.”
