About The Entry

Hearing Ceramics─A Special Exhibition

Hearing Ceramics─A Special Exhibition redefines the perception of ceramic art by shifting the focus from visual appreciation to auditory experience. The exhibition explores the often-overlooked soundscape embedded in ceramics—from the rhythmic gestures of kneading and wheel-throwing, to the subtle sounds of glazing, firing, and cooling, as well as the quiet yet intimate sonic memories formed through everyday use.

Rooted in the concept of “seeing evokes hearing,” the exhibition investigates how visual perception can trigger auditory imagination, constructing a cross-sensory experiential framework. The exhibition unfolds across three interconnected zones—Listening, Observing, and Engaging—guiding visitors through a journey from perception to participation.

The Listening Zone transforms sound into visual forms through audio-visual translation and AI-generated imagery, juxtaposing traditional craftsmanship with digital interpretation. The Observing Zone presents ceramic works that extend beyond visual aesthetics, incorporating rhythm, repetition, and sound-producing structures to explore ceramics as a medium of sonic expression. The Engaging Zone introduces interactive installations and participatory experiences, where visitors can visualize their own voices, activate digital ceramic imagery, paint on ceramic surfaces, and engage in tactile clay play.

By integrating traditional craft, sound art, and emerging technologies, Hearing Ceramics─A Special Exhibition challenges conventional exhibition paradigms and repositions ceramics as a multi-sensory medium. The exhibition invites audiences to not only see, but also hear, feel, and co-create—expanding the boundaries of ceramic art into an immersive and participatory experience.
