This multigenerational residence, located in the heart of Taipei, harmonizes traditional cultural heritage with contemporary design. It integrates two adjacent single-level apartments, reconfiguring them into an open, cohesive space. The design prioritizes fluidity and unobtrusive cohabitation, creating a sanctuary amidst the city’s bustle while offering a seamless blend of Oriental elegance and modern aesthetics.
The core breakthrough of the design lies in the reconfiguration of the spatial layout. By removing original partitions, the space becomes an open living realm, with well-planned circulation paths that guide natural light and unobstructed views. Communal areas encourage family interaction, while private zones are subtly separated by entryways and concealed doors, maintaining a balance between privacy and connection.
A key feature is the integration of two tea corners, tailored to the parents' love for tea—one minimalist and serene, the other featuring a classic dark wood tea table and floor-to-ceiling tea ware display. Separate Chinese and Western kitchen zones ensure that culinary needs are met while maintaining the flow of daily family life.
The design avoids flashy materials and bold colors, adopting a low-saturation palette to create a calm, warm visual foundation. Artisanal wall coatings and natural oak flooring enhance luminosity and comfort. Subtle accents of Calacatta white marble and dark ceramic tiles create texture contrasts, while floor-to-ceiling windows and louvered shutters generate dynamic shifts of light throughout the day.
Modern furniture from prestigious brands integrates seamlessly with the family’s prized art collection. The space becomes a living museum, where artworks from various Chinese dynasties, including a Han Dynasty stone ram and a Ming Dynasty Huanghuli chair, are no longer distant exhibits but part of everyday life, sparking cross-temporal dialogues.
This residence represents a contemporary model of urban living, blending high-end art, family heritage, and modern design philosophy into a cohesive living experience.
