Chengmai County Spatial Development Strategy ＆ Urban Design

This project is inspired by a deep reflection on the role of natural systems in urbanization. Situated in Chengmai, it draws upon native ecological elements—watersheds, coastlines, forests, and farmlands—to form a blue-green network as the backbone of the spatial design. The project integrates ecological modernism with regional cultural influences, utilizing local symbols like water, wind, and coffee culture to create a unique spatial language. A key innovation lies in its scale, covering over 2,000 square kilometers, coordinating urban, rural, and ecological systems at a county level. This approach fills a gap in integrated ecological and social design at the county scale.

The design transforms natural elements, such as wind corridors and green spaces, into climate infrastructure for a “cool city,” quantifying their cooling and carbon sequestration benefits. The project also establishes a dynamic management platform, linking strategic planning to on-the-ground implementation. It connects historical sites, cultural routes, and public spaces, allowing residents to engage with their cultural heritage in daily life.

Low-intervention strategies preserve ecological networks, reduce urban conflicts, and retain farmland’s productive functions. It addresses demographic challenges by creating youth-friendly spaces in urban areas and integrating age-friendly services in rural spaces. The project includes sustainable design principles, such as passive cooling, the use of locally sourced materials, and circular water systems. It expects a 15% increase in carbon sequestration and a reduction in the heat island effect by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius. The development promotes social equity by providing equal access to public services and employment opportunities, revitalizing cultural heritage, and improving quality of life.

This integrated approach provides a replicable model for resilient urbanization in tropical coastal regions, offering a sustainable future for Chengmai while preserving its ecological and cultural essence.
