About The Entry
Governors Island: Self-Sustaining Micro Ecological Island reimagines the conservatory as a resilient climate infrastructure at the edge of New York Harbor. Set on the eastern shore of Governors Island, the project transforms the traditional glasshouse into a self-sustaining micro ecological island where botanical research, public education, water systems, and waterfront circulation converge as one living environmental campus.
In response to rising temperatures, severe weather, and sea-level change, the conservatory operates as both shelter and environmental instrument. Transparent growing structures protect sensitive plant collections, while rainwater harvesting, hydroponic cultivation, passive microclimate regulation, solar energy, and water-quality monitoring are made visible to the public. Sustainability is not hidden as service infrastructure; it becomes part of the spatial experience.
Accessible by boat and ferry, the project emerges as a quiet landmark for ecological adaptation, a resilient anchor at the edge of the harbor, standing like a beacon through rain, wind, and changing weather. Architecture breathes with plants, water, light, and climate, inviting visitors to learn from the fragile systems that sustain life while offering a durable point of orientation between island, harbor, and city.
