Cascade Island is located along Guangzhou’s central urban axis, at a point where the city’s history and future meet. To the west lies the cultural memory of old Canton. To the east is the growing digital energy of Pazhou’s innovation district. The project responds to this condition by reinterpreting Lingnan living through a contemporary architectural language.
The design concept, “Order on the Axis, Harmony of Endless Rhythms,” reflects Guangzhou’s layered urban identity. It turns this context into a calm and refined residential experience. From the outset, the project was conceived as an “outwardly restrained, inwardly luxurious” urban sanctuary. A tree-lined arrival boulevard buffers the noise of Guangzhou Avenue. It gradually shifts residents from the pace of the city into a quieter homecoming sequence.
The architecture avoids a conventional monumental entrance. Instead, it creates a restrained and composed presence. Floating glass volumes, with a jade-like quality, sit above sculpted stone walls. Layers of subtropical planting soften the transition between city and home. Deep grey recessed spaces, full-height glass, and framed garden views create moments of compression and release. Together, they form a hotel-like arrival experience with references to Lingnan spatial traditions.
The site planning is inspired by the openness and fluidity of traditional Lingnan gardens. Within a limited urban footprint, the design creates a series of connected courtyards. These courtyards blur the boundary between architecture, landscape, and social space. Arched colonnades reinterpret Guangzhou’s historic arcade streets. Curved stone surfaces add a sense of softness and recall the elegance of Cantonese architecture.
To create more spatial depth on a compact site, the towers are lifted 14 meters above ground. This opens the lower levels and allows the landscape to extend vertically. Sky lounges, cascading terraces, elevated gardens, and a suspended swimming pool form a three-dimensional social landscape. Light, water, planting, and movement are brought together across multiple levels.
Cascade Island reimagines luxury urban living as a layered spatial journey. It balances urban energy with calm, cultural memory with contemporary design, and local identity with an international architectural vision.
