About The Entry
This project masterfully transforms a compact, previously unassuming venue in Lisbon into a highly immersive izakaya, inviting guests to embark on a cinematic journey steeped in Eastern martial arts lore and historical culture.
Addressing the challenge of a potentially boring dining environment, the design team zoned the space into 23 distinct scenes to guide guests through a specific emotional arc. The circulation starts at a market-style façade, moves through a fisherman’s market foyer, and culminates in a lantern-filled stairwell. This layout optimizes spatial flow and naturally directs guests through the unfolding samurai-geisha tale, turning a standard meal into a participatory event.
Operating within a highly constrained budget to achieve cultural integration, the team prioritized atmosphere over expensive finishes. They created a life-size antique wooden boat as the centerpiece, effectively blurring the lines between reality and fiction. Furthermore, the team utilized fire-resistant straw and soft ceramic faux walls to serve a practical safety function. These materials evoke the authentic, aged aesthetic of a historical Japanese village market, all at a fraction of the cost of traditional materials.
Balancing immersion with operational viability became a core focus, leading the design team to incorporate modular staging and movable soft furnishings. This allows for flexible layouts and updates, keeping the space dynamic for returning guests while reducing long-term maintenance costs. Extending this resource-efficient philosophy, sustainability is further embedded through low-impact craftsmanship. The team used coffee-stained cement for self-leveling floors to avoid harmful industrial dyes and upcycled existing structures, such as original doors, through creative surface treatments instead of demolition, significantly reducing construction waste.
This holistic vision—where every design decision serves both the narrative and the planet—has proven to be a resounding success. Such a distinctive approach earned Saikai Izakaya rave BBC Portugal coverage shortly after opening. It’s now Lisbon’s most talked-about immersive dining destination, blending cultural depth and a distinctive brand identity.
