About The Entry

Designed by MVRDV, the UR Beijing Flagship Store transforms a fashion retail destination into an architectural landmark that connects brand identity with the cultural memory of Beijing. Located in Sanlitun, one of the city’s most visible lifestyle districts and adjacent to leading luxury brands, the project gives UR a bold urban presence while creating a layered journey for visitors.

The architectural expression begins with the facade. Inspired by the texture of Beijing’s hutongs, the exterior is composed of interlaced aluminium elements that reinterpret traditional roof tiles and circular tile-end motifs. The dichroic coating dichroic coating changes color according to light and viewing angle, giving the building a shifting appearance throughout the day. Selected areas of the facade swell outward into wave-like three-dimensional surfaces, creating depth, shadow, and a memorable street-facing identity.

Seven circular portals, inspired by the moon gates of traditional Chinese architecture, form the key interface between the city and the store. They function as entrances, display windows, and visual frames that connect the exterior with the retail environment inside. Through the largest central portal, visitors enter a grey-brick space that recalls the material atmosphere of Beijing’s alleyways while providing a calm architectural backdrop for fashion display.

Across the store, each level is shaped by a distinct geometric language. The lower floors reference traditional circular forms, while the upper floors become increasingly fluid and contemporary. Six special zones are inserted into the spatial sequence to present collections and create moments of discovery, including a playful room made from recycled-fabric modules, a mirrored urban room, and a curtain-defined room that can change with seasonal themes or host works by local artists.

By combining facade innovation, cultural references, retail display, and flexible exhibition settings, the project turns a flagship store into an architectural experience. It is both local and international: rooted in Beijing’s hutong, moon-gate, and grey-brick imagery, yet expressed through a contemporary commercial building language that strengthens UR’s identity in the city.
