Mantle of Landscape is a sculptural chair that explores the dynamic relationship between external structure and internal essence. Its dark brown cylindrical shell embodies stillness, order, and composure, while the vibrant and textured base revealed through a bold diagonal incision represents vitality—a living energy pressing against the restraint of formal boundaries. The design symbolizes conflict, balance, and harmony, echoing the Daoist philosophy of coexistence and transformation.

The lower relief integrates landscape metaphor with modern design language. Unlike the static symmetry of traditional mountain-water representations, the slanted cut introduces layered mountain undulations, capturing the dynamic flow of terrain. The interplay of solid and void mimics the Chinese understanding of nature in flux, moving between stillness and movement, form and meaning.

Craft Innovation

The landscape texture on the base combines precise machining and artisanal craftsmanship. The structural framework is formed with 5-axis CNC machining, ensuring optimal geometric accuracy and seamless assembly. Following this, the surface relief is created using a bespoke hand-troweling technique. Layers of a resin-based compound are applied and sculpted by hand, forming distinct ridges and valleys. This process guarantees that no two chairs are identical, making each piece a unique artistic expression.

While sculptural and architectural in its form, the chair prioritizes comfort through detailed ergonomic design:

The U-shaped backrest made of solid wood is angled at 105 degrees, echoing the natural curve of the spine for ideal lumbar support.

The seat cushion integrates high-resilience foam engineered to allow a 35 mm compression stroke, evenly distributing pelvic pressure and enhancing long-term seating comfort.

This ensures that the piece functions equally as an art object and a resting space.
