ARITA-SCAPE is an attempt to liberate Arita porcelain, with its 400-year history, from the realm of vessels and ornamentation, and to reimagine it as a “porcelain landscape element” that generates scenery within space.

Arita porcelain is born through the interaction of earth, water, fire, and glaze under intense heat. It is a crystallization of layered phenomena, where technique and nature, intention and chance, control and unpredictability intersect. Within its material body lies a quiet memory of time, shaped by both natural forces and the hands of skilled artisans.

This project focuses not only on the inherent qualities of Arita porcelain—its durability, water resistance, and fire resistance—but also on its distinctive capacity to receive light softly and return it to the surrounding space. These qualities are reinterpreted not merely as material properties, but as latent forces capable of transforming the atmosphere of an interior.

Composed of an organically shaped mirror base that evokes the clear waters essential to the making of Arita porcelain, and sculptural porcelain columns rising from its surface, ARITA-SCAPE responds subtly to changes in light, shadow, time, and human movement. Reflections shift, shadows deepen and dissolve, and the surrounding environment is continuously transformed.

Neither simply furniture nor merely a partition, ARITA-SCAPE crosses the boundaries between craft, furniture, sculpture, and architectural element. It expands Arita porcelain from the intimate scale of the vessel into the spatial scale of architecture, opening a new landscape for porcelain in contemporary space.
