About The Entry

Located in Tainan, Taiwan, Between Light and Silence is a contemporary Tibetan Buddhist prayer hall visionarily transformed from an aging, traditional residence. Departing from conventional temple replication, the project reinterprets ancient spiritual heritage through modern spatial language, blending the historic fabric of the building with contemporary design to create an immersive sanctuary for meditation, prayer, and inner connection.

The design narrative centers on "The Journey of the Five Sacred Colors," inspired by Tibetan prayer flags. Blue (wisdom), white (purity), red (compassion), green (harmony), and yellow (abundance) are masterfully integrated into the architectural color theory. This visual progression begins at the ground-floor entrance corridor, serving as a ceremonial threshold that guides visitors from the secular world into a state of mindfulness. As guests ascend, the narrative seamlessly extends through walls, textiles, and fine details, culminating in the main prayer hall.

At the heart of the sanctuary, a striking concentric circular ceiling installation serves as the spiritual centerpiece. Emulating the imagery of divine light descending from above, its radiating halo symbolizes enlightenment and the continuous path of cultivation.

The spatial strategy prioritizes a "secular-to-sacred" transition, enhanced by a refined material palette of warm natural woods and custom craftsmanship. Hidden indirect lighting systems elevate the architectural depth while maintaining acoustic and visual serenity suitable for deep contemplation.

Between Light and Silence goes beyond a place of worship; it stands as a testament to adaptive reuse and cultural continuity. By transforming an old structure into a light-filled sanctuary, the project demonstrates how traditional spiritual values can be revitalized within contemporary society. It offers modern urban dwellers an empowering space to slow down, reflect, and achieve emotional restoration through an elegant dialogue of light, color, and sacred symbolism.
