The Urban Gallery

Providence is a city defined by creativity. Throughout its downtown, large-scale murals transform ordinary building facades into an open-air cultural landscape. Yet these artworks are often experienced only in passing, with few public spaces intentionally designed to celebrate or engage with them.

The Urban Gallery reimagines an obsolete parking garage and its surrounding site as a vibrant mixed-use destination that reconnects people with Providence's mural network. Rather than introducing new artwork, the project recognizes the city's existing murals as a valuable cultural asset and uses landscape architecture to reveal their collective potential.

Through adaptive reuse, the former parking structure is transformed into a series of elevated gardens, public terraces, commercial spaces, and viewing platforms. A network of lightweight Urban Frames strategically captures surrounding murals, creating curated views that encourage visitors to pause, explore, and experience the city from new perspectives. Movement through the site becomes a cultural journey, where everyday circulation is transformed into an immersive encounter with public art.

More than the revitalization of a single building, the project redefines the relationship between infrastructure, landscape, and culture. By treating the city as an open-air gallery and its murals as a connected cultural network, The Urban Gallery creates a dynamic public realm that encourages exploration, supports local businesses, strengthens community identity, and demonstrates how adaptive reuse can transform obsolete infrastructure into meaningful civic space.
