Space Matrix X Airbnb

‘Belonging Anywhere’ is not a tagline. It is an organisational belief — one that Airbnb has built an entire business model around. The question for their Singapore regional headquarters was whether it could also be an architectural one.

The existing space contradicted everything the company stood for. A sterile corporate layout, fixed desking rows, a barrier-like reception desk — an environment that separated people rather than brought them together, and that communicated enterprise efficiency rather than the warmth of genuine hospitality. For a company whose product is human connection, the workspace was undermining the very culture it needed to sustain.

The design response was called The Neighborhood Matrix. The entire 14,385 sq ft column-free floor plate was reimagined as a series of domestic-scale Studios and flexible, mixed-use neighbourhoods — each self-sufficient, each human in scale. The reception desk became a handcrafted barista bar where employees personally welcome guests. The floor plan stopped being a plan of desks and became a plan of experiences.

To embed local cultural identity into the global framework, the material palette was rooted in place: hand-woven rattan, biophilic greenery, warm timber LVT, custom wall tiling inspired by Singapore's layered cultural heritage. These were not decorative choices — they were the physical language of belonging made literal.

Flexibility was designed in, not bolted on. Pivot-folding glass screens allow the same space to shift from a 13-person intimate workshop to a 100-person all-hands presentation without a single piece of furniture being stored away. Natural-light perimeter corridors and residential-style break bays create the conditions for the spontaneous, unplanned conversations that generate the best ideas.

What emerged is not a corporate office that gestures toward hospitality. It is a workspace where the culture Airbnb has built is visible, tangible, and felt from the moment you arrive — a commute-worthy destination that makes people genuinely want to be there.
