Unfolding Light

Designed for a family of three, this 66-square-metre residence transforms a compact new-build apartment into a calm, light-filled setting for everyday family life. The original enclosed kitchen restricted movement and visually compressed the common area. By removing its partition and linking the kitchen, dining area, and living room, the design allows daylight, views, and daily activities to flow across one continuous space.

Rather than relying on decorative complexity, the interior is shaped through proportion, material texture, and carefully controlled light. A restrained palette of grey, white, warm wood, hand-applied cement-texture finishes, and patterned glass gives the home contemporary clarity while preserving warmth. Low structural beams are absorbed into changes in ceiling height; softened corners and indirect lighting blur their edges, making the ceiling feel more coherent and the room more expansive.

At the entrance, silver-haze textured glass screens the direct view into the home while admitting light and retaining a sense of human presence beyond. Storage is distributed along the perimeter and lifted from the floor where possible, reducing its visual weight and keeping the centre of the living area open for family interaction.

A custom timber dining table rotates out from beneath the kitchen counter when needed. In daily use, it can remain compact; when relatives or friends visit, or when additional dining and preparation space is required, it opens to seat up to four. This adaptable element turns limited floor area into flexible capacity without permanently occupying the room.

Natural light, layered indirect illumination, and simplified lines work together to make the apartment feel larger than its footprint. The result is not simply a minimalist interior, but a responsive home in which spatial calm supports connection, movement, and the changing rhythms of family life.
