Reframing the Edge

The project transforms the 554-meter perimeter of Nanhua Junior High School into a safer and more legible threshold between campus and city. Rather than treating the walkway, entrance, guardhouse, and parking shelters as separate utilities, the design reorganizes them as a continuous campus edge that clarifies pedestrian and vehicular movement while supporting the school’s future development.

The new 25-square-meter guardhouse marks the relocated main entrance along Shangbin Road. Composed of two 3.6-meter square modules, its compact reinforced-concrete volume opens toward the surrounding circulation with an approximately 270-degree field of view. One structural column extends beyond the enclosure, separating entrance and exit while supporting the two-way cantilevered roof. Acting simultaneously as structure and marker, the column gives the renewed entrance a clear identity.

Located near the coast, the parking shelters respond to the demanding saline environment with a robust system of square steel columns, beams, projecting brackets, and reinforced-concrete roof slabs. Upstand beams keep the underside visually continuous, forming four curved waves within each structural bay in response to the parking modules below. The heavy concrete roof appears suspended like a fabric canopy, creating a deliberate contrast between mass and lightness, rigidity and softness.

Together, the walkway, guardhouse, and parking shelters redefine the school boundary through a consistent language of movement, visibility, structure, and shelter. What was once a fragmented campus edge becomes a coherent interface—safer for students, clearer for everyday circulation, and more open toward the surrounding neighborhood.
