Secluded Retreat

The residence is conceived as a private retreat for a book-loving homeowner who lives with pets and seeks an alternative to the standardized aesthetics of urban living. Located at the foot of Qingcheng Mountain, the design draws from the surrounding mountains and forests, using plain walls, natural timber, soft lighting, and framed views of seasonal greenery to create a quiet atmosphere. Books, tea utensils, natural textures, and relaxed circulation become part of everyday life, allowing reading, contemplation, nature, and daily rituals to coexist.

Inspired by traditional Chinese literati culture, Taoist ideas of harmony between humanity and nature, and Zen philosophy, the design avoids historical imitation and deliberate novelty. Instead, it establishes a dialogue between tradition and contemporary life through restraint, negative space, and carefully selected objects. Calligraphy, vessels, handmade ceramics, and preserved architectural elements provide subtle cultural expression, while original timber columns and old door frames are reused to retain traces of time.

A restrained material palette creates a quiet yet distinctive visual character. Rough timber, smooth white walls, dark flooring, warm lighting, and soft furnishings establish layers of texture and contrast. Flexible boundaries allow multiple functions to coexist within a compact layout, while localized lighting defines areas for reading, meditation, tea, and living. Pet-friendly circulation and an open courtyard further support a shared domestic environment designed for people and their companions.

Sustainability is integrated through adaptive reuse, natural materials, local craftsmanship, and passive environmental strategies. Timber, stone, cotton, linen, and reused architectural elements reduce environmental impact, while LED lighting, smart controls, shading, and optimized openings improve energy efficiency and ventilation. Gravel and native trees in the courtyard reduce irrigation needs while supporting a small ecological habitat. Through restrained design and close integration with nature, the residence offers a slower, contemplative way of living.
