About The Entry
The packaging series for Waima Bestiary draws inspiration from a Tang dynasty miscellany, Youyang Zazu, using mythical beasts of Eastern fantasy as the storytelling medium to become a spiritual bridge connecting the brand, the product, and the consumer.
It extracts iconic images—White Rhinoceros, Golden Crow, and Blue Snake—to achieve a deep integration of mythical symbolism, flavor profile, and brand philosophy. White Rhinoceros, which embodies the virtue of remaining pure amidst turbidity, spurs individuals to seek inner harmony. Golden Crow echoes the smooth, golden brew and symbolizes the pursuit of moving toward the light. Blue Snake, known for its paradoxical nature of “poisonous head and antidotal tail,” mirrors the flavor of intense bitterness followed by a rich aroma, conveying the philosophy of unity in opposition.
The packaging series fuses traditional Chinese opulent lacquer paintings with rugged woodblock prints. Rich hues like black and gold or blue and red—accented by gold-leaf-like highlights—create a layered, dense visual effect, while sharp, blade-carved lines give a sense of strength. Moreover, vertical inscriptions and smaller annotations are reminiscent of colophons in classical Chinese painting and calligraphy. The overall presentation exudes the mystical aura and cultural depth unique to Eastern mythology. In addition, each bottle label is tailored to match its corresponding theme: Golden Crow adopts glossy metallic paper for golden radiance and warm ambiance; Blue Snake employs glossy metallic paper and reverse UV printing to improve tactile depth and mimic snake scales; White Rhinoceros utilizes composite paper and a matte finish, boasting a rough texture to evoke the image of the rhinoceros.
