About The Entry

Modern knowledge work often demands long periods of concentration under tight deadlines, constant revisions, and digital overload. In these conditions, physiological activation can accumulate quietly before the wearer consciously recognizes fatigue. NeoDermis responds to this gap through a SKIN-CONFORMAL WEARABLE that translates hidden bodily changes into an immediate, private sensation. Worn on the forearm like an artificial dermal layer, NeoDermis continuously captures HEART RATE AND SKIN TEMPERATURE. These signals reflect different temporal qualities of workplace stress: heart rate responds rapidly to acute events, while peripheral temperature changes more gradually as activation develops. The system standardizes both signals against the wearer’s personal baseline and combines them into a proposed ACTIVATION INDEX. A persistence-based threshold identifies sustained activation across consecutive sampling periods, allowing the device to distinguish a developing stress response from ordinary momentary fluctuations. Once the index remains above the threshold, integrated contact electrodes deliver a GENTLE ELECTROCUTANEOUS CUE. This discreet bodily signal invites the wearer to pause, regulate breathing, adjust posture, or briefly leave the task. The interaction stays close to the skin and fits naturally within focused work, turning physiological data into a tactile language that supports timely self-regulation. As the wearer settles, the system continues tracking the different recovery rates of cardiovascular and thermal activity. NeoDermis combines a flexible silicone structure, embedded sensing modules, skin-contact electrodes, and compact electronics in a soft form shaped around the forearm. The material provides stable contact and comfortable wear while giving the technology the visual character of a SECOND SKIN. Prototype testing explored two common workplace patterns: sharp, event-driven activation during deadline pressure and gradual accumulation during prolonged late-night work. The results informed the index, persistence logic, and feedback timing. Through this closed loop of sensing, interpretation, feedback, and recovery, NeoDermis reframes stress awareness as an embodied experience. It creates a direct conversation between the body and the wearer, helping subtle physiological changes become felt, understood, and addressed within everyday working life.
