Shanghai Xida Street Impression Cultural Center

The Impression Cultural Center is located on Xida Street, a historic street with 1,500 years of history. As the starting point for the renewal of the entire neighborhood, it preserves and presents a millennium of history, local family heritage, traditional architectural restoration techniques, and residents’ collective memories within a historic building.

The spatial design draws inspiration from the river that has nurtured the neighborhood and the local cotton-textile industry. Linear weaving becomes the project’s unifying design language, complemented by contemporary metal structures.The exhibition approach moves beyond conventional text-based displays. Co-created with local residents, intangible cultural heritage bearers, and historians, the center features an immersive theater modeled on a traditional local tea-house, an oversized dynamic scroll inspired by Along the River During the Qingming Festival, a Treasure Table documenting the details of thousands of protected buildings, and an exhibition of photographs from a local residents’ competition. Through these experiences, the cultural center has become both an anchor of Xida Street’s cultural identity and a living bank of collective memory.

The entire second floor integrates exhibition areas with a reading room, allowing visitors to sit and rest at any time while looking out toward a temple with a thousand years of history across the street. Since opening to the public, the center has welcomed nearly 100,000 visitors, becoming a cultural gateway and an important window into the urban renewal of Xida Street.
