EXHIBITION OF QINGDAO WEST COAST GENERAL HISTORY

Qingdao West Coast Museum is a comprehensive historical museum that presents the maritime civilisation and regional history of the West Coast area. The new exhibition, RISE WITH THE SEA: EXHIBITION OF QINGDAO WEST COAST GENERAL HISTORY, is centred on the theme of “Prospering Through the Sea”, connecting six thousand years of human activity, three thousand years of Langya cultural heritage and two thousand years of maritime Silk Road history into a continuous historical narrative.

The exhibition design transforms regional history from static display into an immersive spatial experience. A flowing circulation inspired by coastal curves guides visitors through different historical periods, allowing the space to evolve with the timeline. Open partitions, semi-transparent structures and interactive installations create connections between exhibition areas rather than separating them, maintaining continuity across the historical narrative. The Qin and Han Langya section becomes a spatial highlight through curved digital screens and glass walkways, enabling visitors to experience archaeological sites from a closer perspective.

A unified ocean-blue visual foundation establishes the museum’s maritime identity, while differentiated colors and materials correspond to the characteristics of each historical period. Natural textures, cultural references and contemporary display technologies work together to translate historical changes into a tangible spatial language.

Beyond presenting artifacts, the exhibition adopts a “revealing people through objects” approach, using multilingual interpretation, layered information systems and digital media to connect historical objects with the lives, environments and communities behind them. Through the integration of storytelling, spatial design and technology, the museum creates an accessible platform where visitors can understand the evolution of coastal civilization and develop a deeper connection with the region’s maritime heritage.
