About The Entry

Modern urban life often creates a sense of fatigue and disconnection from nature. While houseplants bring a visual connection to the natural world, one of nature’s most evocative experiences, the earthy scent of rain, remains largely absent from indoor environments. This led to a question: could a houseplant become an active sensory experience, allowing people to reconnect with nature through the scent of rain?

In nature, petrichor, the distinctive earthy aroma associated with rainfall, is released when raindrops strike dry soil. The impact aerosolizes compounds including geosmin, which are produced by soil-dwelling microorganisms, into the air. As these compounds enter the air and reach our noses, they create the familiar earthy scent of petrichor.

Potrichor is an interactive planter that recreates the olfactory experience of rain at the touch of a button. The name combines pot and petrichor, reflecting its dual role as both a planter and a sensory device.

Potrichor translates this natural phenomenon into a compact sensory experience for the home. An integrated pump disperses a fine mist directly onto the soil, recreating the interaction between rainfall and earth. As the mist meets the soil surface, it releases the natural earthy aroma of petrichor into the surrounding air.

This interaction transforms an otherwise passive houseplant into an active sensory ritual. A simple press of the button initiates a miniature rainfall, inviting users to pause and experience a familiar moment from nature within their own home.

Potrichor is more than a planter. It is a hybrid of a living botanical vessel, an interactive object, and a sensory restoration tool, designed to bring an overlooked experience of nature, the smell of rain, back into everyday urban life.
