Lumen

LUMEN is a sensory lighting device created specifically for neurodiverse children. For sensory overload that may arise from noisy, bright, crowded, or unpredictable environments, it offers a non-verbal, unobtrusive means of self-regulation through light and an ordered visual experience. Rather than suppressing children's sensory responses, this approach establishes a calm, stable, and predictable visual environment, enabling children to regain a sense of control over their attention and environment when sensory stress rises.

LUMEN draws the underlying design from a new interpretation of the visual structure of the mandala. It derives four principles from the structure, including radial symmetry, concentric layers, repeating rhythm, and a clear center, and translates them into a standalone visual design framework rather than directly reproducing traditional mandala patterns. These repetitive and regular visual units create a predictable viewing cadence, while a clear central focus helps attention establish a visual anchor, elevating 2D patterns into a dynamic light-and-shadow interplay in space.

Physically, LUMEN compares the structural features of different Platonic solids and settles on the dodecahedron as its optical carrier. This polyhedral structure enables light to diffuse subtly and evenly in multiple directions, extending regular patterns from a flat plane into 3D space and creating an enveloping visual environment. Besides, LUMEN repeatedly tests materials, printing methods, and structural configuration to keep projected patterns clear without overstimulation, and combines this with adjustable lighting to enable users to adjust the light environment according to their current state.

Overall, LUMEN is not just a lamp, but a sensory lighting device that connects visual harmony, spatial light, and mood-related needs.
