About The Entry

Bubble Protocol is a speculative XR immersive exhibition that explores how digital technologies are reshaping human relationships in an age of hyper-connectivity.

Social platforms have made it easier than ever to meet, communicate, and express emotions. Yet greater connectivity does not necessarily lead to greater intimacy. The project focuses on weak ties—low-commitment relationships formed through social media, anonymous communities, and algorithmic networks—and asks: When connection becomes infinitely easy, do we still know how to truly approach one another?

The project uses the bubble as its central metaphor. A bubble represents the digital persona we construct, the algorithmic filter that determines what we see, the emotional shell that protects us, and ultimately the physical boundary between bodies. This metaphor is transformed into an immersive spatial system composed of interconnected spherical environments.

Visitors experience a seven-stage journey. They first enter a particle-filled digital environment representing the attraction of connection. The spatial experience then progressively narrows into an algorithmic corridor, where information becomes increasingly homogeneous. In an anonymous voice-bubble space, visitors can approach and listen to transformed confessions from strangers without knowing their identities or responding to them. A mirror environment exposes the construction of online personas, while an information-flooding space turns comments, notifications, and digital fragments into overwhelming physical obstacles.

The critical transition occurs when visitors are asked to remove the VR headset. Digital mediation disappears. In the final connection hall, real-time tracking transforms each visitor into a luminous bubble. As people physically approach one another, their bubbles expand and generate flowing networks of light. On the surrounding screen, digital fragments gradually dissolve until only human hands remain, finally reaching one another.

By combining XR, spatial installation, real-time interaction, and responsive environments, Bubble Protocol does not reject digital connection. Instead, it questions its limits and proposes a simple possibility: technology can connect us, but presence is what allows us to truly meet.
