About The Entry
Located in Xunpu Folk Culture Village, Quanzhou, the project sits beside the flower-headdress experience zone and overlooks Quanzhou Bay. Rooted in the village’s thousand-year fishing heritage and Maritime Silk Road history, the design creates an immersive cultural destination that connects traditional folk customs with contemporary experiences, including chocolate making, cultural education, and social activities.
Inspired by Minnan red-brick architecture, ocean waves, and traditional swallowtail roof ridges, the building translates regional heritage into a contemporary architectural language. Red terracotta panels form a sail-like facade, symbolizing the Maritime Silk Road’s spirit of exploration, while the curved roof echoes the movement of waves. A circular rooftop opening interprets the traditional Chinese concept of “round heaven, square earth.” Rather than relying on decorative symbols, the design expresses local identity through materials, architectural forms, and layered lighting.
The four-story space establishes a progressive journey from cultural discovery to hands-on creation and social engagement. The first floor features cocoa products and cultural displays; the second houses an open chocolate-making laboratory for workshops and educational activities; the third combines a Maritime Silk Road salon with fragrance experiences and 270-degree sea views; and the rooftop lounge frames the sky and harbor through its circular skylight dome. Floor-to-ceiling glazing connects the interiors with the coastal landscape, making the sea an integral part of the visitor experience.
Designed for the coastal environment, the project uses durable terracotta cladding, anodized aluminum, and treated timber to withstand salt spray, moisture, and strong winds. Independent climate control and ventilation systems support chocolate production and fragrance experiences, while carefully planned circulation reduces conflicts between different functions. Prefabricated components and locally sourced Fujian materials help improve construction efficiency and control costs.
Sustainability is integrated through natural daylight, energy-efficient LED lighting with intelligent dimming, durable materials, and regional sourcing that reduces transportation emissions. Beyond environmental considerations, the project supports cultural sustainability by creating an active setting for intangible cultural heritage. Through chocolate education, fragrance experiences, and flower-headdress activities, traditional culture becomes an interactive part of contemporary life, encouraging younger generations to engage with and carry forward local heritage.
