About The Entry
The world does not have a single color. What appears beautiful from one perspective may seem ordinary from another; what seems dark may conceal something vibrant beneath; what is thought evil may be seen as kind from a different perspective. The collection “Beheld” is an exploration of this fluidity of perception, exploring how much of what we see is shaped by the eyes that behold it.
The designs are inspired by Tabula Scalata, an art technique dating back to the sixteenth century that combines two to three images on one painting. A flat background and both sides of some angled slats are painted differently. As viewers move, different images appear. I applied this visual structure into garments to reveal different colors and details when observed from different angles. Cloisonné, a decorative technique using metal wires to outline colorful patterns, also inspired the intricate, cell-like fabric draping structures.
From the front, two designs appear almost entirely earthy brown. From the sides, vivid red and orange shapes emerge through sculptural openings. The hooded garment takes this concept further: orange color appears when viewed from the front, red from the left, and yellow from the right. The garments create an interactive experience as the viewers move and observe.
Materials and craftsmanship are central to this project, too. I used 100% jute burlap for the outer fabric and 100% linen for the linings. Through draping, gathering, and shaping, I transformed burlap into clusters of hollow cells, then applied natural rubber latex to reinforce the draping structures. I also created pleats extending down from the shoulders for the hooded piece. Once the draping structures were finished, crocheted petal-like yarn elements were embedded into these structures. The yarns are recycled from unraveled secondhand scarves and sweaters.
Ultimately, Beheld is an invitation to reconsider what we see. By making colors and forms shift with the viewer's position, I hope to show that our first impressions never tell the whole story, and that another perspective can reveal something entirely unexpected.
