About The Entry

Joyful Ape is a public art installation created for Wuxi National Software Park. Suspended from the exhibition center’s facade and facing the southern plaza, the sculpture depicts an ape in a spacesuit. Its identity draws on “cheng xu yuan,” a playful Chinese nickname for programmers that substitutes “ape” for the word’s final character. The spacesuit extends this wordplay into a symbol of exploration, translating the software community’s pursuit of new possibilities into an approachable public presence.

The central design challenge was to connect the character with both architecture and audience. The team explored more than ten poses and tested one-handed and two-handed hanging configurations through physical models. The selected pose anchors one hand to the building while turning the body toward the plaza and extending the other hand downward in invitation. The ape’s natural climbing behavior becomes part of the architectural composition, transforming the facade into a point of visual connection with passersby.

Translating a two-dimensional mascot into a large sculpture required successive refinements. Within structural load constraints, the designers adjusted the hands and forearms, lowered the belt, and reshaped the abdomen to preserve the character’s rounded proportions. Changes to the eyelids, gaze, and mouth created a gentle smile, maintaining a sense of warmth despite the elevated placement and monumental scale. The park logo on the shoulder and the “苏B-0510” chest badge reinforce its local identity.

Structural calculations confirmed that the steel structure’s strength and deformation met national code requirements. By integrating character design, architectural placement, and engineering, Joyful Ape gives the park’s technological identity a tangible, welcoming expression. It establishes a distinctive landmark where the ambition to explore is communicated through a simple gesture of invitation.
