Located in Huangdao District, Qingdao, Ethereal Habitat is a private club covering an area of 800 square meters. The design team draws inspiration from the currently popular wabi-sabi style and traces to its source, with subtle light and shadow effects as well as well-chosen local characteristic elements are adopted so that this project can fully display the culture and scenery of the coastal city.
The project takes natural materials as major building materials. Via the combination of natural grains and marble with a warm and smooth texture, it boasts a simple yet exquisite visual effect, harmonizing architecture with nature. In this way, a peaceful and tranquil tone is determined, with the resulting serene and natural atmosphere able to ease consumers’ negative emotions. The whole space sheds natural light and mainly uses light strips/walls. The color scheme including yellow and blue is applied in the light walls, which is designed with grids to effectively soften dazzling light. The harmonious combination of such soft light and colors enables all senses of consumers to engage in associations with the golden beach and blue ocean. The main light wall is featured by dark blue paired with the wave-shaped element that is throughout the whole project design to give consumers a sense as if they were in the deep ocean, whose combination with the traditional Chinese realistic rock painting and jellyfish lamps as auxiliary lighting draws on figurative images to provide consumers with an immersive experience of visiting the deep ocean. The jellyfish lamps look like clouds, together with the clouds and cranes painted in the main light wall, bringing consumers an ethereal feeling of flying in sky.
The concave-convex mirror on the ceiling is another highlight of the project, and it is combined with subtle lighting performance to form an unique effect of dappled light and shadow, thereby offering a dreamlike sense. With dynamic or static changes indoors, it presents various irregular lighting effect to silently shift scenes of the sky and ocean for consumers so as to give a multi-sensory experience via a multi-layered interaction mode, providing a space of self-cultivation.
