Surrounded by rivers and Shikumen building complex at Jiaxing Road in the center of Hongkou District, the Shanghai Music Valley features unique historic buildings and a thriving music industry. It covers an area of about 280,000 square meters, and its overall construction area is 76,000 square meters. In the overall planning and upgrading process, the new industrial building area will be about 110,000 square meters. In order to promote the innovation of industrial clusters, the cultural nodes of the Music Valley and the North Bund will be connected for the prosperity of surrounding communities. The designers put forward the concept of "culture as the body and music as the soul", and conceived the overall plan for the renewal of Music Valley.
The upgraded industrial park has five music-themed open-air stages, four theaters and one music museum, all of which form a "ring of performing arts". The all-round performance scene allows visitors to immerse themselves in the charm of music culture. Not only the activities inside the building are externalized, but also integrated with the city. Through a coherent walking route, the Music Valley and various cultural and tourist attractions in the North Bund are connected to create a leisure experience that features sightseeing, entertainment and shopping. The popular performing arts and cultural scenes suitable for festival parades, street performances, and open-air feasts will arouse wider social participation and stimulate more possibilities.
In order to retain and make good use of the colorful community life, the designer abandoned the traditional renewal idea of large-scale demolition and construction. Instead, the historical features of Hongkou lanes are preserved and diverse amenities are added to create an all-weather art and leisure community. Various streetscape management measures, such as upgraded facilities, buried pipelines and open-air businesses along the north-south Harbin Road style commercial street and the east-west commercial street along the Binhe River, have created a cultural atmosphere, giving more pedestrian space to tourists and residents.
