Guangming Science Park, Shenzhen

The Science Park, covering an area of 2,080,000 sqm, is the central park in the central area of the Guangming Science City. It is a large-scale comprehensive urban park with the theme of science and integrating functions such as ecology, science popularization, health, entertainment, sports, leisure, and sightseeing. As the "green core" of the Guangming Science City and even the northern part of Shenzhen, it provides happiness for the city, surrounding residents and scientists. Moreover, it accelerates the improvement of the ecological environment of the Guangming Science City, creates a livable and convenient living environment, helps promote the construction of "world-class science city" and "Shenzhen North Center", and vigorously improves the quality of life and ecological environment of the Guangming District.

The design team aimed to create a space that served all local stakeholders. They made surveys on scientists, surrounding residents, sellers, children and the elderly etc. to know their needs. Everyone suggested what they wanted to have in the park.

The biggest challenge in the site was the large area of cultivated land, which was a very sensitive property of land use in China, and we had to consider it from the overall design. For the cultivated land, we decided to restore it to cultivated farmland, so that visitors can enjoy the idyllic scenery without touching national regulations.

With the core concept of "Guangming Changes with the Progress of Science" as the main theme, the lychee forest and wild meadow left over from the current site have been promoted to the largest natural resources in the park. The overall forest reconstruction area has reached 903,200 square meters, and the area used measures of the sponge city was increased by 86,488 square meters. In addition to the ecological strategy, scientific nodes were implanted in the park according to the characteristics of the three major sciences (life, information, and material sciences) of Guangming, so that the ecology and the city can develop sustainably.
