This summer installation was meticulously crafted as an integral part of the celebrated London Festival of Architecture, captivating visitors at the Duke of York Square. It artfully responds to the festival's overarching themes of "Great British summer memory" and "island life," inviting contemplation of the nation's rich leisure history and coastal architectural heritage.

In homage to the illustrious legacy of Sir Hans Sloane, whose statue graces the Duke of York Square, the design draws inspiration from his significant contributions. Sir Sloane, renowned for his profound bequest of a vast collection of natural specimens, serves as a poignant muse for this installation.

The designers embarked on a fascinating exploration of Sir Sloane's collection of shells, and from this voyage of discovery emerged their vision—a spiraling tower of sand, adorned with a meticulously crafted surface that intertwines light and shade in an intricate dance. Beginning with a humble hand sketch, the design journeyed from conception to realization as it was entrusted to the skilled hands of a sculptor. Meticulously executing the intricate details, the sculptor transformed the design into a captivating sandcastle, evoking the essence of Sir Sloane's contribution and the spirit of the festival.

The installation stands as a testament to the seamless fusion of historical inspiration and contemporary artistry. Its spiraling form symbolizes the perpetual motion of memories and the passage of time, invoking a sense of nostalgia while celebrating the vibrancy of the British summer experience.

Visitors to the Duke of York Square are beckoned to immerse themselves in the tactile beauty of the sandcastle, to appreciate the interplay of light and shadow on its surface, and to reflect upon the historical significance of leisure and seaside culture within the United Kingdom.

Through this thoughtfully designed installation, the London Festival of Architecture embraces the opportunity to engage and inspire its audience, inviting them to explore the tapestry of cultural heritage woven into the fabric of Great Britain.
