Built in 1931, The Dorchester is one of London’s most iconic and luxurious hotels. Having achieved its status as a Grade II listed building in 1981, the architectural grandeur of Sir Robert McAlpine’s ‘perfect hotel’ is world-renowned.

Lighting Design International has a long-established history of working with The Dorchester, so when the team was invited back to design lighting schemes for renovations to The Promenade, Artist Bar, Vesper Bar, Guestrooms Circulation and external areas including the building façade, forecourt, garden and canopy, we were excited to get started. The work would form part of an extensive programme of renovation to the hotel – using innovative design techniques, world-class artists and architects and an array of imaginative installations to highlight the magic and majesty of “The Dorch” for many years to come.

The refurbishment of this iconic London institution sees architecture led by ReardonSmith and interior design from names such as Pierre Yves-Rochon, who has been transforming the Lobby, The Promenade, Artist Bar and the new Cake & Flower Boutique, as well as the guestrooms and suites; and Martin Brudnizki, who has been appointed to redesign the Vesper bar.

Celebrating such an iconic and historical hotel and being mindful of concealing the lighting as much as possible. Our main goal was to create The Dorchester’s inimitable vibrant spirit and convivial soul, without disturbing the ornate architecture and heritage features of the Grade II building.

These key areas required intelligent and sympathetic lighting design to enhance the building’s opulent architectural features, exquisite artwork selected by Visto and luxury guest experience – all synonymous with The Dorchester’s international reputation as one of the most luxurious hotels in London.
