Demolition and reconstruction project of Lai Hui Elementary

This project is located in Lai-Hui Village, Erlun Township, Yunlin County, Taiwan. It is one of the few settlements that preserves the traditional Hakka culture of Zhaoan. Through the past 60 years since it was founded, It faced some serious issues such as old school buildings, backward equipment, the declining birth rate and the out-migration. Through the reconstruction , we hope to arouse the resonance of every generation with their hometown. What’s more, we hope to weave the traditional Hakka culture into modern society again.About the layout, we extend the axis and continue the texture of the settlement in Lai-Hui Village. Meanwhile, the whole campus is surrounded by the large and small courtyards and plazas, making the campus much brighter and more transparent. Besides, It is mainly divided into the administrative building ( line-shaped) and the teaching building (ㄇ-shaped). In order to reduce the sense of oppression on the road side, the administrative building is only one story. As for the teaching building, the classrooms and the library are on the ground floor, while the second floor is for specialist classrooms and audio-visual rooms.In addition, the administrative and teaching building are connected by a semi-outdoor corridor, with green belts dotted in the middle; thus, the corridor can be used as a safe semi-outdoor teaching space with a certain level of transparency. Meanwhile, It allows teachers and students to have an open learning environment, and the green belt of the campus also surrounds teaching space; therefore, no matter what season the students look out from the classroom, the lush greenery will always come into their view.As an indicator for local culture and learning place, we conducted an in-depth investigation of the settlement texture, hoping to continue the cultural spirit and traditional elements. Not only connect the needs nowadays, but also bring a new transformation to Lai-Hui Elementary School.In the end, we create a carefree place where children can learn and play freely, and increase the diversity of their activities; at the same time, reconnect the local community, arouse the sense of identity, and bring about more wonderful experiences altogether.
